About the institution

The Province of Fryslân is a governmental institution (provincial administration), its taks can be classified into the following categories:

• Responsible for promotion the prosperity and well-being of its inhabitants in general.
• Responsible for promotion and preservation of the Frisian language and culture
• Implementing certain laws and measures issued by the national government, like national laws about language and culture; for example the law of The Use of Frisian Act (‘Wet gebruik Friese taal’).
• Implementing the Framework Convention (entered into force in the Netherlands on 1 June 2005) and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ratified by the Netherlands on 2 May 1996)
